The story of this poster
The propaganda picture shows a worker with his rivet gun and a soldier with his machine gun, symbolising the important connection between the war effort at home building up the industry so the soldiers can fight at the front line. Carlu's poster is characteristic of a genre of war poster design which drew on modern fine art movements. The maker thought this was a good poster that showed that everybody had to work for winning the war but a survey of factory workers revealed that some had mistaken the worker in this poster for a gangster and attributed it to the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation)'s "war on crime".
