The story of this poster
German recruiting poster for the Volkssturm (People's Storm), a sort of home guard organization formed in 1944. All men aged 16-60 years who were not part of the war organization or had a job that was vital to the community was called into the Volkssturm.
The Volkssturm units were commanded by the local Gauleiter (approx. area governor) as political beliefs were seen as more important than military strategy. This was also a move to try to get the servicemen to maintain morale as the Volkssturm had limited access to weaponry and other war material - the Volksturm "uniform" was nothing more than a armband and units lacked motor vehicles and heavy armament.
