The history of the poster

This poster is an advertising poster for beer. The advertising was a successful campaign that turned to beer drinkers who lived in Stockholm the late 1800s. The brewery that the advertisement concerns is called the Big Brewery. It was one of the largest breweries in Stockholm at this time. The brewery started in 1890 and was located at Hornsberg on Kungsholmen.

The advertising poster is one of several motifs that the Big Brewery ordered from a company called "Artistic posters". This company had the ambition to advertise with quality. They were inspired by the poster art in France that was fashionable.

In Sweden, during that time, "real" artists were hired to create images with artistic qualities. The artist hired was Nils Kreuger. He was already a very famous artist and creator of his time. His more common motives were Swedish landscapes.

The image takes it’s viewer to a different century than the 19th century when the poster was created and published. The man in the picture appears to represent a man from the 17th century. The hat on the sneak and a large foamy glass of beer in the hand make this vintage poster a delight to the eye. During the 17th century Sweden was a great political and military power. Likely something that at this time was perceived as positive and hence wanted in this advertisement. The hat on the sneak and a large foamy glass of beer in his hand makes this vintage poster a delight to the eye.
