The history of the poster

Dutch recruitment poster for Waffen SS from the period 1941-1944. The poster is one of several with similar themes, where historical figures are used to get dutch citizens to fight on the German side.

On this poster, Paul Kruger, former president of the South African Republic, is pictured above a marcheing column of Waffen SS soldiers.

Kruger was born in South Africa and came to be a very important part of the country's history. He led the Boer struggle against the British, and came to be seen in many countries as a freedom fighter who fought against the mighty British Empire. After losing the Second Boer War, he fled to Europe, where he lived his last three years before departing in 1903.

The phrase "Alles sal reg kom" (everything will be fine) was a popular phrase used on paintings, magazines and many other places. It has often been attributed to Kruger, but actually comes from J.H Brand, president of the Orange Free State. The phrase in its entirety
reads "Alles sal reg kom as ons alman ons plig doen" (everything will be fine if everyone does their duty). Another erroneous statement is also that the phrase is written in Afrikaans - during this time (c. 1880) Dutch were spoken in South Africa, albeit with some dialect. Afrikaans as their own language only became reality in the early 1900s.
