It consisted of approx. 4 000 volunteer paratroopers who made the choice to be faithful to their former allies, Germany. It was the "honorable thing to do" as they saw it. They received some training in Germany and bravely fought alongside the German Luftwaffe Fallschirmjägers in Italy.
